What a great story about a dog with heart. As Akiak races with her team, and then runs to catch up with it, the villages are named, making the book a good way to familiarize students with the race route. Prior to reading AkiakI knew almost nothing about the Iditarod. She gets away and runs the race herself until she aoiak up with her team a couple days later.

An older dog in the last year of her prime helps win the Iditarod. After you read Akiak, feel free to come back and let me know your thoughts. Initially, even a blizzard does not deter her.
