My arteries were clogging as I was reading. It is in reality a lovely, informative and entertaining book about what eating and cooking in France, in alicce own home, friends homes, great homes and also restaurants grand and humble, during the first half of the 20th century was like. Acting as Stein’s confidante, lover, cook, secretary, muse, editor, critic, and general organizer, Toklas remained a background figure, chiefly living in the shadow of Stein, until Stein published her memoirs in under the teasing title The Autobiography of Alice B.
