Both antagonists are larger-than-life characters, even stronger alpha-males than the protagonists seem to be. In order for a Maasai warrior to become a man, he ssmith face and kill an African lion with his spear. Penrod arranges for him to be placed as apprentice to professional hunter Percy Phillips in order to allow Leon to spy on movements of man and machine in German East Africa, as he suspects the Kaiser assegsi preparing for war.
Leon uses his contacts among the Maasai – gained from saving Manyoro’s life – to establish a secret information and communications network between Nairobi and German East Africa, while Manyoro and Ailbur, a young Maasai who had assisted Leon during his recovery, serve as his trackers. This book was a chore, a bothersome pain in the ass.

Sorry I cannot quote the lines that appalled me. The larger story is interesting. The period setting and idea is good WW1 and devious goings on in darkest Africa between the Germans and some renegade south Africans. Levy rated it liked it. Posing as a professional game hunter Leon is tasked with gathering information on one is his clients, a wealthy industrialist Otto Von Meerbach.

Assegai is a consummate feast of a story that is rich in vivid description. As a novel, Assegai is far from perfect. The characters were weak and unloveable, unhateable as well but then I couldn’t muster up any emotions at all. The story takes place in Africa at the onset of World War I.
Real-life characters like Smity Roosevelt and his son, Kermit, are woven throughout the story. Obviously well done by the master storyteller, however, this plays out too much like a Hollywood nazi-spy epic.
The word corny is not so sophisticated but it fits. Lists with This Book. In ‘The Triumph of the Sun’ he was a womanising but competent military officer and spy, in ‘Assegai’ he is a portly general in the king’s army in British East Africa and a manipulative spymaster who exercises control over his agents.

I have read wilbuf his books so know the man’s talent. When he becomes discouraged by the dishonesty of army life, his uncle recruits him for a special mission – spying on the Germans in East Africa, whom the General suspects are preparing for the Kaiser’s war.
