I would say he makes several of the worst decisions in literature – all of which drive the action of the book and keep us on our toes.
Worthwhile overall, but The Red and the Black it isn’t.
It was inspired by an inauthentic Italian account of the dissolute youth of Alessandro Farnese. I never knew what the heck was going on. Gina is described as the most beautiful woman in northern Italy, and her charisma makes her the life of the court.
Stendahl’s great strength is showing us characters who are oblivious pamra their own inner motives those motives being plain as day to us readers and there is some of that here, as well as some compelling characters especially the Duchesa Gina Sanservina, the real hero of the storybut markedly absent is the biting wit and barbed social commentary of Stendahl’s other great novel.
A sprawling, sloppy, often-exhilarating read.

After three months, the Prince proposes marriage to Gina but is rejected. Fabrice grows up surrounded by intrigues and alliances for and against the French — his father the Marchese comically fancies himself a spy for the Viennese. The novel now divides its attention parmma him and his aunt Gina his father’s sister. Alas, the Conte was there only to abuse the poor gentleman with his words.
