I am sure there are many people that will argue with the efficacy of directly copying master drawings of figures and sculptures, but in my personal experience it has proven to be an excellent way to teach a beginner, as well as hone an accomplished artist’s skills.
Vol 1 plates are all whole-page drawings. It is interesting to know that van Gogh worked through this course more than once on his own and Picasso copied these plates at the Barcelona Academy. For most of the next half-century, this set of nearly masterful lithographs was copied by art students worldwide before they attempted to draw from a live model. Different parts of the body are studied in order of difficulty, until full figures are presented. The Bargue course is the one that Vincent Van Gogh worked his way through twice on his own. The book is essentially a collection of plates that offer various degrees of difficulty.
