Such didactic points are well taken, but Harris is too good a storyteller to lay them on haeris. Caught in a shell game that leaves him forever putting out fires only to have them ignite elsewhere, Cicero plays for the future of the republic…and his life. It follows on immediately from Imperiumstarting with the beginning of Cicero’s consulship and ending with his exile as a result of the enmity of Clodius. Since finishing LustrumI’ve really missed these characters and have found it difficult to read anything else.

Do I recommend this one? Hemingway comes to mind, but even moreso Steinbeck, who had less literary pretension and more sustained and pointed topical engagement.
I think that Harris did a great job of illustrating how illogical Cicero could be at times. We pick up just about where Imperium left off. Invictus Eagles of the Empire But I’d recommend reading Imperium first coonspirata if you have zero background on Ancient Rome. And using his speed notation skills.

We see more of Caesar, Pompey, and Clodius, among Cicero’s friends and enemies. Because they all play roles, and some of those during this particular changing Roman era play various roles quite expertly to differing people.

Better still, his portrayal of Cicero is among the most convincing I have read.
Cicero emerges as the giant of history that he is for all the right reasons in these books. This certainly has the correct title. Anyway, Conspirata or Lustrum, this is the second book in the Cicero trilogy and my favourite, although it covers only approximately 4 years of Cicero’s political and personal life. Harry Robdrt e l’Ordine della Fenice. The research underlying Harris’ books is always exceptional and this one is no exception.
I bought this book a while back on discount. I love that he remained awkwardly sweet throughout and that his faults were shown tooand I love the way that Harris writ “And do you know what most torments me as I lie awake at night? Well I was very excited to see this book and that Imperium was not meant to be standalone and is instead first in a series going to guess that there might be one or most likely two more books left to gosince my main complaint with Imperium was that I wanted more. His subsequent dealings with Clodius, akin to having Charlie Sheen run the Occupy Wall Street movement, just go to show that anyone’s fortunes can be raised to sublime heights or come crashing down into the slime when enough people get an idea into their heads.
