While searching the palace archives, they are attacked by Dark Eldar, but Damocles squad breaks orders and comes down to aid Priad. The Iron Snakes chapter itself also notably diverts from many expected tropes.

The core story itself is divided up into a multitude of short stories spanning decades, and features Damocles Squad doing everything from training recruits to engaging Chaos warbands. The result is an action-packed book which never loses sight of the rhe of it’s protagonists.

As his victories and failures are weighed up, his fate will be decided.

While it’s not brotbers Training Day 40,it is somewhat along those lines and the story has less of an epic enake feel than most. This was part of an intended design to be sure, and Priad himself is pushed into something of a character arc, but it doesn’t quite work.

I consider it to be the best novel about Space Marines in the 40k canon that I’ve read, particularly because it is not about one of the ‘standard’ chapters and abnegt carry the strictures of the Heresy setting.

Though the Iron Snakes are able to deploy an acceptable number of vehicles, and also include Dreadnoughts and Librarians amongst their forces, the primacy of the combat squad means that they concentrate on infantry tactics in battle. The subject of so much of the Black Library’s output. The stories are separate but connected. This would be enough on its own, but the book also works in a number of additional factors to further flesh out their culture. Many would argue that the book is more of an anthology than a novel.
