Granted, the Iron Snakes are not a founding chapter and only have one book, but I found their story much more fun and their characters more memorable. Four out of Five Stars Better yet, when it does add in a large scale battle or three, it feels natural to the brotherss and remains just as engaging as the skirmish battles. Many are even surprised at how rapidly unenhanced humans age, or cannot pick out things like puns.

There are some flaws of course. My only criticism is that the book feels a little like a collection of short brothhers rather than a novel. Meanwhile, the Iron Snakes of Ithaka have sworn a pledge to protect the Reef Stars from ruin, at whatever cost. They experience guilt, sadness, regret, hate, and i think that is the way that readers can connect to the characters and to the book. Still, they don’t go falling in love or anything outrageous like that; there are limits. Searching out the Daemon again, Brother Illyus is killed in another encounter.
But he can be compelling in his dedication, his compassion and thoughtfulness.
Plus that bit introduces one of the best characters of the entire saga, abnet if we only see an extremely small amount of him, unfortunately. Something which, at least, gives them a sense of being ancient heroes without overstepping such boundaries.
I always have loved how Dan Abnett creates his stories.
Brothers of the Snake follows Sergeant Priad and the Damocles Squad as they battle to preserve humanity against the myriad foes that threaten to destroy it, from the depraved Dark Eldar to a vast Ork Waaagh! Abnettt normally sure touch in the Warhammer 40k universe seems to desert him when dealing with Space Marines as heroes.
snaje The Brothers of the Snake abnetg everything you’d want to start off with if you’re interesting in this Universe. The charcaters to are wonderfully developed, with each character having their own distinct personality and fighting style.
But Priad refuses to deem Damocles squad battle-ready after learning that the brothers under his command had undertaken a forbidden test – free-diving into a deep ocean trench. While searching the palace archives, they are attacked by Dark Eldar, but Damocles squad breaks orders and comes down to aid Priad. The Iron Snakes chapter itself also notably diverts from many expected tropes.
The core story itself is divided up into a multitude of short stories spanning decades, and features Damocles Squad doing everything from training recruits to engaging Chaos warbands. The result is an action-packed book which never loses sight of the rhe of it’s protagonists.
As his victories and failures are weighed up, his fate will be decided.

Others, such as the surprising ease in which a daemonic infestation enters a highly secure location without the detection of multiple highly trained psykers, never quite seem to work. Dealing an evil cult on one planet. Dan Abnett fans, WH40K fans. After reading Wrath of Iron by Wraight, I’m used to unquestioned and intimidating bastards in ceramite.
While it’s not brotbers Training Day 40,it is somewhat along those lines and the story has less of an epic enake feel than most. This was part of an intended design to be sure, and Priad himself is pushed into something of a character arc, but it doesn’t quite work.

I consider it to be the best novel about Space Marines in the 40k canon that I’ve read, particularly because it is not about one of the ‘standard’ chapters and abnegt carry the strictures of the Heresy setting.
Though the Iron Snakes are able to deploy an acceptable number of vehicles, and also include Dreadnoughts and Librarians amongst their forces, the primacy of the combat squad means that they concentrate on infantry tactics in battle. Each squad-leader is expected to eventually nominate a successor from within his squad, who will be chosen to accompany him to officer-level briefings and take over command in the event of his death.
The subject of so much of the Black Library’s output. The stories are separate but connected. This would be enough on its own, but the book also works in a number of additional factors to further flesh out their culture. Many would argue that the book is more of an anthology than a novel.

This Novel is pretty unique from other Novels I’m used to not just Warhammer, in general as, instead of the straight forward story, snaje told through I’ve been a fan of Warhammer 40, for a few years now and I’ve invested myself in the lore and have read several novels. While this is intended to carry out the strengths cited above, the nature of it undermines this somewhat.
They brithers intentionally dah and intentionally removed from humanity, but it lacks the additional elements which would benefit later sbnett.

Trivia About Brothers of the S The thing I found fascinating is the culture and traditions of the Chapter and how much they have diverged from their progenitors.
Another golden winner from Dan Abnett in my opinion. If you’re a fan of Warhammer 40, and Games Workshop in general then you’ll probably love this book as you’ll be familiar with the background to the stories before the action starts. A common criticism of other books was that the marines shown there were often all too human, and lacked the more noted mental reshaping the lore stressed.
The other thing that struck me about the book was how structurally interesting it was and how it reminded me of the early Hornblower novels.
Priad turns off the message midway, and says they have done nothing which they need to explain to anyone. Abnett had managed to make a unique and interesting Chapter of Space Marines.
