Because he’s such a detailed writer, I got a chance to see how his characters changed, sometimes drastically, over the course of their lives. If you haven’t seen the movie with Robin Williams in the starring role and John Lithgow giving a superb performance as Roberta Muldoon, watch it. Equally surprising to me was the fact that she never changed, was never convinced of the abnormality of her orientation by seeing a really hawt guy and wanting to hold him down and fuck him till he couldn’t walk anymore, never unearthed any terrible memories of abuse which turned her off of sex forever, never went to a therapist who sexed her life right up with a bang, never wrote any secret diaries which were later found and revealed that it was all an act, because that kind of cop-out cowshit is what I was expecting.
And we can all agree that some people, no matter how loveable they were as children, end up good, and others are intolerable dickholes with faces in need of a beating?

While the novel starts off innocently with a coherent voice and some sense of reality, the progression of the novel, and indeed Garp’s life, is a progression into soap opera and a ridiculousness that undermined the whole novel for me. His mother is a nurse who got pregnant through very worrisome measures.
His joys, his troubles, his weaknesses, his anxieties, all abound in the pages.
