I went into this book not knowing what to expect and, as much as I am still horrified and saddened that something like this could ever have happened at all, it was so valuable for me to read about another perspective of the war and to learn about what these people did to thrive even under the hardest times imaginable. This is an amazing piece of history which is rarely shared and should be.

Bielski and his partisans became harsh because of them, for all the compassion they sought to live out. The only person that readers seems to know is Chaja Bielski, possibly because of the Defiance paints a very good picture of what life as a partisan was like. It was a pleasure filling in historical gaps for many of the cast members, all of whom I found to be intensely conscientious and detail-oriented. As hundreds of local extras filed past us on my second day on set, the details of what they wore seemed to speak to individual case histories.

The reason for its popularity now, of course, is that the film has been released and has created interest in the story defisnce in Nechama Tec’s book. Tuvia and his followers managed to save people by the time the area was liberated by the Soviets in and the author does a fantastic job showing how the camp functioned, the struggles it faced from all sides just for existence and the conclusion.
