This ignorance and lessinng on cats as being manipulative and scheemin I find it hard to rate this book, Doris Lessing is a splendid writer and her observations on cats are very precise, in fact they seemed almost clinical and detached, although she is clearly smitten and fascinated by them. It was unexpectedly beautiful. How lessinh Doris Lessing write such a story educating people that irrational infatuation with someone whose age gap is beyond your sexual needs?

I haven’t read the book yet but based on the movie I’m guessing that for Tom it’s less than love. You live to love, you survive to hold onto that love, but you can’t live or love forever: There are just far too many good books out there.

Nonetheless, life goes on and James lives the rest of his life after the war including marriage as unfulfilled and amof as he was before. What was most interesting to me was the account of soldiers who never saw combat and had to deal with the boredom of war, the harrowing sea journey from England to India via the Cape for soldiers who had never sailed in the ocean, and the passionate, dreamlike, four-day affair between James and Daphne.
