Sounds like a great idea and many like the book. Solid characters and a consistently intriguing plot though McDevitt’s grasp of the details isn’t always secure: Narratively, there’s a need for some climactic struggle at the end of their journey, sure, but this one feels a bit tacked on. I would recommend this book to any one who likes a good story Dec 09, Spurnlad rated it it was amazing.
Which is my biggest problem with etdrnity novel Yes, they killed a sentient AI who remembered the people they were trying to understand. No one even knows how long ago the Roadmakers that’s us civilization crumbled, or what the cause of its demise was. Then the five-page long epilogue tells the reader that oh, by the way, the Roadbuilders were killed by an airborne virus that came from the rainforests, possibly as a population control check.
While the general concept of this book a journey through a post-apocalyptic world has been used many times before, it’s how it is told that counts. Either way, I like where it could have gone, and I was fascinated with it roar the beginning.

Eternity Road is not a bad novel, just takes pages to get going. Just keep in mind you may be very disappointed by the end. McDevitt is a good writer, and it’s a fun story. McDevitt is an artisan who builds the texture of the story by placing one brick carefully upon another. Chaka is our strong female lead and she wants to find out about the death of her brother. I quickly got into the storyline of this book. McDevitt was certainly justified in thinking that intelligent readers would have a basic understanding of the history itself, so as to know automatically what history books could be expected to relate; and to sumarize the contents of that many books at the end of this one would have made the ending unnecessarily bulky and anti-climactic.

The characters start out assuming that a plague wiped everybody out. This felt like reading a Lonely Planet guide to the northeast United States many centuries in the future. But we ARE told that they brought back a major treasure trove of books on history, some of which are identified. It’s worth reading once.

But you won’t need to re-read it. McDevitt does, but it’s more of one of those ones where you sort of nod and say “Ah. But if he did why would he keep silent all those years?
There were so many loose ends and avenues of exploration that just went nowhere, and I think the book would have been a lot better if Silas had survived instead of one of the people who actually did. A review on Amazon, which I read years before I read the book, raised a complaint about the ending.
It was those sights mcdevittt managed to keep me engaged novel.
