This book represents his view of historical events over the past several centuries. The book is what it says, a history of all the world civilizations Centralized curriculums are a generally bad idea, but when you’ve got one written by Fernand Braudel, it is hard not to be jealous of France.
I was surprised by its depth and even handedness. This marvelous survey of world history, the last of his books to be translated into English, was originally intended for French “sixth-formers.
Religion; politics; social and economic affairs. There was no mention of fernanf of the seminal African empires in history: On the plus side, it was an amusing read, with many facts that stand up as anecdotes or impressive trivia. This book, though, is really for scholars or life-long hobbyists – it would be a bit heavy going for someone with a casual interest in the subject.

It is also a great book to read on a business trip. Full of sweeping generalisations and inaccuracies, I’d like to think this is of use only as a record of how far the study of history has come.
