May 11, Eleni rated it really liked it. But whiskey guzzling Fup duck. I keep lending my copies out and having to replace them, but I see it as my little way of making the world a slightly better place. Fup was generally indifferent to Westerns, except for seemingly arbitrary scenes when she would quack excitedly.
The fact that that could be accomplished in less than 60 pages is remarkable in itself. I can’t imagine anyone hating the book although there will probably be some and there will be others, indeed there are, who will develop an “almost evangelical fervour” for the thing. I think it has a fairy-tale ending, worthy of children imagination if i I’m so glad I picked this up in the local library. I can say that I certainly read the remaining pages more than once and with much more care than I read the preceding pages and I was certainly motivated to go back to the start to see if there were any clues that I had missed.

And I expect most of you are ahead of me now in realising that in the final chapter we have the climatic confrontation between Tiny and Lockjaw. She’s also sharp, touchy and temperamental, just like Jake, and is not afraid to make her feelings of disapproval clear by a judicious peck or two.
Thorough and warm review Jim. Tiny goes out one day “eager to finish digging the last holes” when he finds that Lockjaw has been at them, the neat pile of earth beside each posthole “had xodge trampled, scattered, and generally ravaged.
There must be a reason, don’t you think? I first read Dodye years ago, actually after having liked Not Fade Away as I tend to go find other things by authors I like, and would have to dig Fup out and re-read it, but I think you’re right, it’s probably more of an apologue or parable than strictly a fable.
Reading Fup you’ll find some raunchy, earthy humour, some naughty sarcasm, and an awful lot of wisdom, joy and fun. Despite the directness of the prose, there is an intuitive depth that I ascribe to exceptional observation of the natural world and the human character. Decent price for the condition of the book. A very well dodgf, poignant story of an old man’s love for his grandson, and a mallard duck who becomes a part of their family.
And if you want to find out if Granddaddy Jake is truly immortal, if Tiny ever does manage to rid himself of Lockjaw and if Fup Duck learns to fly you’ll just have to read it.
