The Illuminatus! Trilogy
Part of the fun of the book is deciding which of the several drug-fueled narratives is actually presenting the “real” truth about the Illuminati; each one gives a different account of its true power, purpose, and origins.
Always fun; always strange; always infuriating, but the gags, slang, and observations are beginning to become dated and forced. They then subconsciously suppress all memories of having seen the word, but the sense of panic remains.
Oct 27, Erik rated it it was amazing. While Shea concentrated mainly on historical novels, Wilson produced over 30 works, mixing fictional novels with nonfiction. There 23 kinds of people who read this book, those who get it and those who don’t. It was just going around the group. When it seems to believe in it’s own conspiracies or Burroughs’ bizarre understanding of history, it becomes a victim of its own joke.
I would like to throw in that I downloaded it from Audible. Paperbackpages. Part III Leviathan refer to recurring symbols of elements of the plot. There’s no sense of any such depths to Shea’s work – you could get the same stuff by gathering up some middle-class nineteen year olds who have read Nietzsche for the first time, getting them high, and letting them ramble.
Far from the accusations of being a text ‘written on an acid trip’, it is lucid and deliberate, even if it does take itself lightly. These include discussions about mythology, current events, conspiracy theories and counterculture.

This is one of the weirder things I’ve read. Rather like the remarkable sixties series ‘The Prisoner’, eyr final pyrmaid is that you must decide for yourself what is important, what is real, and what is misdirection. When I was in my mid-twenties, I read it again over a long weekend in order to use it as source material for a game I was prepping to run.

This first book just sort of stops instead of ending, and if I wasn’t reading it as part of the omnibus I’d be a lot more annoyed. The prison is bombed and he is rescued by the Discordiansled by the enigmatic Hagbard Celinecaptain of a golden submarine. This book has intrigued me for years!
The idea that the top secrets of the Illuminati were cut from the books because the printer decided to trim the number of pages is a joke typical of the trilogy. Between the lines, Shea is dissecting every corrupt thought and throw-away rumor you could imagine with the cold logic and wit to make this honestly the best book I’ve read in years. The characters are thinner than the pulp paper the book is printed on. It also refers to Thomas Hobbes ‘ seminal work of political philosophy, Leviathanas a metaphor for an all-encompassing, authoritarian state – a common metaphor used in libertarian discourse.
If one piqued my interest, I looked it up and more often than not, learned something entirely new. But after a while, all that switching just got confusing, and the action got a bit repetitive.
Similarly, the books espouse the use of mind-altering substances to achieve higher states of consciousness, in line with the beliefs of key counterculture figures like Timothy Learywho is mentioned throughout the three novels. My advice to authors everywhere: Top Reviews Most recent Top Reviews.
Conceptually, it represents a transition from Dick’s characters, always unable to escape destruction at the hand of their vast, uncaring society, and Cyberpunk characters who are able to adapt to their distant, heartless society and thrive where they can.
