The goal is liberty, and one might say who is more free than the feudal lord—negative liberty. Actually, if I understand correctly, travel to past is always to a parallel earth rather than ours. Has all of this access to information—and each other—led to a more enlightened, humanist understanding of ourselves?
Vance was inspired by pre-World War 2 Japanese society when writing this one; thus the fabulous formality of human interactions in this story. Can someone own the mountains? There was no internet back then, but there were plenty of ways people had to isolate themselves, avoid interacting with anyone rkmfuddle, particularly if they had money.
Content redistribution allowed under these conditions. Going to so much trouble changing history for rufuddle in a parallel world!
