I thought this book did a good job of tracking trends throughout Latin America and it left me wanting to find out more. Chasteen is an engaging writer and makes the history interesting, but in textbook form, there is very little in the way of resources and citations.

The periodic maps are well suited but perhaps more visual information is wanting. At times, the author rambled on a lot without being able to cut to the chase. With captivating storytelling, Chasteen exposes subtle nuances and colorful characters as we march through five centuries of history. Bolod professor actually wrote this book so it was interesting to compare his writing and speaking styles.

Definitely a good introduction johhn the development of Latin and Central America. Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. Later editions include updates and expansion of colonialism, nationalism, the Cuban Revolutionkn current political and economic issues. When I team-taught the subject two years ago, we used the second edition, and I liked it then. It is perfect for those new to the subject. The book provides insights into all the major ideas through colonization to the present.
