I think this was her first novel and rrevels sets the scene for all of the Victoria Holt genre, as in gothic mystery romance. Kigkland was my first Holt book. Therefore, the setting, the well-crafted plot, and the believable characters all add up to a very good read. Victoria Holt is always readable even though her plots are often transparent and predictable. Holt has written a decent book, easy to read, always keeps you guessing with underlying values between friends and family. Want to Read Currently Reading Read. Honestly I don’t care whether I have figured out who the culprit is in these novels or not.
I really liked Gabriel and Friday and I wished he had a bigger part. A gothic romance setting needs an old house with a perhaps sketchy past, and Gabriel’s home, Kirkland Revels certainly is that. They marry without the knowledge of the groom’s family and friends.
She receives help from an unexpected source, and both her and her child are saved. She didn’t fully trust Simon but she realized she didn’t have a choice.

She was still writing historical fiction under the name of Victoria Holt as well as yet another pseudonym, Jean Plaidy. Gothic goodness, even if a bit predictable. I like the West Yorkshire moorland setting – I’m from East Yorkshire myself – and the way the author brings the second half of the nineteenth-century vividly to life. What an entertaining book!!!

This one I bought at a used book sale at my local library. As usual she sucks the reader into a fully-fleshed world with excitement, danger, and minute character analysis. After 4 years of French Boarding school Catherine returns to her home to her fathers house.
