I felt the middle section dragged with material that didn’t advance the plot, faju that’s probably due to my impatience with Victorian literature in general.

Silas is periodically subject to mysterious catatonic fits, attributed to his massive opium consumption. This story tells the tale of a young and Naive Maud Ruthyn, whose father’s death leaves her under the care of the mysterious uncle of the story’s title.
One of a half dozen or so nineteenth-century novels still read for pleasure rather than as a school exercise, Uncle Silas is the Victorian mystery story par excellence, displaying both Le Fanu’s considerable narrative ability and his emotional power. One of the reasons Le Fanu succeeds so well is the nature of his villain. Putting the interests of one’s child first would dictate that Maud go to live with her middle-aged cousin Monica, who has a lovely house, plenty of money, is fond of Maud, and actually does have her best interests at heart.
Hidden out of sight, Maud witnesses Dudley brutally murder Madame de la Rougierre by mistake in the near-darkness. With its subversion of reality and illusion, and its exploration of fear through the use of mystery and the supernatural, Uncle Silas shuns the conventions of traditional horror and delivers a chilling psychological thriller.
According to my rating system, a five star book is one of the best I have ever read. Are Gothic novels respectable?
First edition title page. The descriptions of the places, Bartram-Haugh in particular, are superb. Not only does Austin Ruthyn neglect her, but his will provides that on his death she will go live with his brother Silas, whom Maud has never met, until her majority.
This was a wonderfully engaging read which I have to say was a bit of a surprise.

Maud has unfortunately been conditioned to obey her elders especially male eldersand so much of what drives the tale is her gradual enlightenment — it’s psychologically engrossing.

Uncle Silas’s power is evident long before Maud loses her father, in the sinister personage of her French governess whose speech Le Fanu renders so beautifully I could hear her and other family and staff members who pop up at Maud’s family home from time to time.
